Hands On ElectricalLED downlights are one of the most popular lighting upgrades we install across Melbourne homes. They're energy-efficient, long-lasting, and when done right, they look fantastic. But there's more to a good downlight installation than just cutting holes in the ceiling.
Here's everything you need to know before you start.
If you still have halogen downlights, upgrading to LED is one of the best electrical investments you can make. LED downlights use up to 80% less energy than halogens, run much cooler (reducing fire risk), and last 25,000–50,000 hours compared to 2,000 hours for a halogen globe. Over a 10-year period, the energy savings typically far outweigh the upfront installation cost.
The most common mistake with DIY downlight planning is incorrect spacing. As a general rule, downlights should be spaced approximately 1 metre apart and positioned about 600–900mm from walls. For a standard 2.4m ceiling, this usually means one downlight per 1–1.5 square metres of floor space. Get this wrong and you'll end up with hot spots, dark corners, or an over-lit room that feels clinical.
If you have a ceiling cavity above the room — which includes most homes with a roof space or a second storey above — you need fire-rated downlights. Standard downlights create a hole in the ceiling that allows fire and smoke to pass between floors. Fire-rated downlights include an intumescent seal that expands in a fire, maintaining the fire rating of the ceiling. This is a building code requirement, not optional.
If you want to dim your LED downlights, you need to make sure both the downlights and the dimmer switch are compatible with each other. Not all LED downlights are dimmable, and not all dimmers work with LED. Using an incompatible combination can cause flickering, buzzing, or premature failure of the globes. We always check compatibility before installation.
In Victoria, any electrical work — including installing new downlights or adding circuits — must be performed by a licensed electrician. This includes running new cables, installing new switches, and connecting to the switchboard. Replacing a like-for-like globe in an existing fitting is generally fine for a homeowner, but anything beyond that requires a licensed tradesperson.
A typical room of 6–8 downlights takes around 2–3 hours, including cutting holes, running cables, and connecting to the switchboard. A full house installation typically takes a full day. We always leave the ceiling clean and tidy.
