Split System Installation in Melbourne: What to Expect on the Day

14 Apr 20264 min read

A split system air conditioner is one of the best investments you can make in Melbourne's climate — cooling in summer, heating in winter, and far more efficient than portable units or ducted systems for individual rooms. But a lot of homeowners aren't sure what the installation process actually involves.

Here's a step-by-step look at what happens when our team installs a split system in your home.

Before the Day: Site Assessment

For most standard installations, we can provide a quote over the phone or via photos. For more complex installs — multi-head systems, difficult wall types, or long pipe runs — we'll do a brief site visit first. This lets us confirm the best location for the indoor unit, identify the optimal pipe route, and check whether a dedicated electrical circuit is needed.

Step 1: Positioning the Indoor Unit

The indoor unit (the wall-mounted head) needs to be positioned where it can distribute air effectively across the room. We'll discuss the best location with you, considering factors like ceiling height, furniture placement, and the direction of airflow. We mark the wall, drill the mounting bracket, and secure it level.

Step 2: Running the Pipe and Cable

The refrigerant pipes, drain line, and electrical cable run from the indoor unit through the wall to the outdoor unit. We always aim for the neatest possible pipe run — using trunking (plastic conduit) on external walls to keep everything tidy and protected from the elements.

Step 3: Installing the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit (the compressor) is mounted on a wall bracket or concrete slab. We position it for good airflow, away from direct sunlight where possible, and at a height that keeps it accessible for servicing. All connections are made to the indoor unit via the pipe run.

Step 4: Electrical Connection

Split systems require a dedicated electrical circuit run from your switchboard. We install this circuit, connect the outdoor unit, and ensure everything is correctly fused and protected by a safety switch.

Step 5: Vacuum and Gas Check

Before charging the system with refrigerant, we vacuum the pipe work to remove moisture and air. We then check the refrigerant charge and test the system in both heating and cooling modes to confirm it's operating correctly.

Step 6: Handover

We walk you through the remote control, explain the different modes, and answer any questions. We leave the area clean and tidy, and provide you with any warranty documentation for the unit.
